Demolition Day

D-Day in Yangon – Auspicious Days & Demolition

We knew of course that our business centre renovations had to start on an ‘auspicious’ day to guarantee success, and it was an easy decision to let the choice be driven by local wisdom rather than Western logic.

So when the contractor told us they mustn’t start work on a Monday because ‘in Myanmar, a project begun on a Monday will always need to be done twice’ we simply moved the timetable forward by a day.   Then my Myanmar-Nepali assistant, Sandy, told us we all had to follow that (well-known) tradition of eating yoghurt ‘for good luck’ before even a tile was laid…..

So feeling confident that we had covered all bases, work began after breakfast on Tuesday June 4th.    The first (sledge) hammer blow was thrown and demolition of all existing fixtures in the space began….
